The Team:
The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital in Tasmania. The hospital provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services as well as paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. It is also the state’s tertiary trauma centre.
The ED provides a tertiary level service for people with illness or injury 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Our busy ED provides care for >75,000 patients annually with an admission rate of more than 35% and a paediatric case load of 20%.
The RHH Emergency Department has a co-located Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which is a short stay ward for patients requiring a brief hospital stay (generally less than 24 hours). The EMU has 24 short-stay beds operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a high turnover ward environment and a variety of clinical presentations.
The Role
Registered Nurses (RN) in the RHH ED are responsible for conducting comprehensive and rapid patient assessments, prioritising care, and providing ongoing clinical monitoring in a fast-paced environment. They deliver timely, high-quality care across a broad spectrum of acute presentations for both adult and paediatric patients, while coordinating patient flow to support efficient service delivery.
Our RN's ensure accurate and timely documentation in accordance with legal and organisational requirements, maintain strict infection prevention and control standards, and practise with accountability in line with professional, ethical, and legislative frameworks. RHH ED RN's also support the development of others through supervision and guidance of junior staff and students, and engage with patients and families in a compassionate, respectful, and culturally safe manner, particularly in high-stress or critical situations.
