About the role

The Veterinary Pathologist provides veterinary pathology expertise to support animal health, disease surveillance and biosecurity outcomes across Tasmania. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the diagnosis and investigation of diseases impacting production animals, wildlife, and aquatic species, while working alongside a dedicated team of veterinary and scientific professionals.

This is a permanent position working 73.50 hours per fortnight (or a minimum 58.8 hours by negotiation).

In this role, you will:

• Provide expert gross pathology and histopathology interpretation for the Animal Health Laboratory diagnostic service.
• Support investigations into endemic, emerging and exotic diseases affecting production animals and wildlife.
• Participate in diagnostic rosters for terrestrial and aquatic animal health programs.
• Provide specialist advice to clients, internal and industry stakeholders on animal health matters.
• Contribute to animal disease surveillance, biosecurity preparedness and emergency disease response activities.
• Supervise and mentor technical staff, while fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.

Our ideal candidate has

• Extensive experience in veterinary pathology, with expertise in gross pathology, histopathology and disease diagnosis across a range of animal species.
• Advanced knowledge of diagnostic methods for endemic and exotic animal diseases, with experience supporting disease surveillance, research or animal health programs.
• Demonstrated leadership capability, including supervising or mentoring staff and contributing to the effective operation of a diagnostic service or animal health program.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to provide expert advice to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and project management skills, with the ability to deliver high-quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.

Position requirements

• Candidates must have a degree in Veterinary Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution enabling eligibility for registration under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1987.
