The Team
The Anaesthetics and Post Anaesthetic Recovery Unit (APARU) provides specialised perioperative nursing services across the Royal Hobart Hospital. The unit supports anaesthetic and post-anaesthetic care across 14 operating theatres, associated induction and procedure rooms, and a range of procedural and clinical areas outside the main operating theatre complex. These include Endoscopy, Angiography, Cardiac Catheterisation, Medical Imaging and other areas where anaesthesia, sedation or post-anaesthetic care is required.
APARU provides nursing support across the perioperative journey, from preparation for and assistance with anaesthesia through to the immediate assessment, monitoring and recovery of patients following anaesthesia or procedural sedation. The service also supports emergency and unplanned activity, including trauma, airway emergencies and procedures requiring anaesthetic assistance outside the operating theatre environment. The unit cares for patients across a broad range of surgical specialties and levels of clinical acuity and works collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, nursing teams and other multidisciplinary services to provide safe and coordinated perioperative care.
The Role
Anaesthetic nurses are specialised perioperative nurses who work alongside anaesthetists to support the safe delivery of anaesthesia and associated procedures. Their role includes preparing and checking the anaesthetic environment and equipment, undertaking appropriate safety checks, preparing medications and airway equipment, assisting with induction and emergence from anaesthesia, supporting airway management and responding to clinical deterioration and emergencies. Anaesthetic nurses also provide care during procedures undertaken outside the main theatre environment and must be able to anticipate the requirements of the anaesthetist and respond rapidly to changes in a patient's condition.
Post Anaesthetic Recovery Unit (PARU) nurses provide specialised care to patients during the immediate post-anaesthetic period. The PARU nurse receives the patient following anaesthesia or sedation and undertakes continuous assessment and management of airway, breathing, circulation, neurological status, pain, nausea and vomiting, surgical and procedural complications, and other effects associated with anaesthesia. PARU nurses are required to recognise and respond promptly to deterioration, initiate appropriate interventions and escalate care where necessary. They work closely with anaesthetists and the broader multidisciplinary team to determine when a patient has met appropriate criteria for discharge from PARU and can safely transition to the next stage of their care.
You will need
- Current knowledge of, and the ability to apply nursing principles, procedures and practices in the delivery of patient/client care within the perioperative anaesthesia field and in line with legal requirements, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse and ACORN Standards for Perioperative Nursing.
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including written skills and the ability to function effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Knowledge of continuous quality improvement (safety and quality) and the application of evidence based practice within a perioperative practice setting.

Details of appointment
Permanent part time, shift worker position, working 64 hours per fortnight, with an as soon as possible commencement date.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary
$80,524 to $109,175 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.
Access to the Grade 4 salary range $102,439- $109,175 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10% based on qualification type
