The Team

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The work includes a broad range of interesting and complex specimens across almost all disciplines, including gastroenterology, dermatology, gynae-oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, breast surgery, neurosurgery, nephrology, plastic surgery, genitourinary and haematology. RHH provides the statewide non-coronial adult and perinatal post-mortem service. The department will be commencing a new solid-tumour molecular pathology service in 2026. 

The Role

  • Participate in the Anatomical Pathology services provided by the department of Anatomical Pathology at the RHH.
  • Conduct tissue review meetings.
  • Undertake undergraduate teaching of medical students of the University of Tasmania.
  • Provide supervision and training of postgraduate specialist trainees.
  • Maintain involvement in research activities including supervision of research students.

Details of appointment

Fixed term part time, day worker position, working up to 38 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as you would like to join our team until February 2028.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $222,789 - $319,701 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging (delete as applicable)

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $309,222 - $319,701 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year 
  • Motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum, pro rata 
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35% 
  • Subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $17,483 per annum, pro rata
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate
  • Professional development and accelerated pathways.
  • A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.
  • other allowances as applicable.

Eligibility

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria: 

  • Holds specialist registration; or 
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or 
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality. 

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) autopsy certificates - adult and perinatal, or relevant equivalent qualification
