About the role
Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) is seeking an experienced and motivated professional with skills in reserve management and wildlife monitoring to join a small team of 2-3 people on Macquarie Island.
Located approximately halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica, Macquarie Island Nature Reserve and World Heritage Area, is a very remote workplace often referred to as living in a ‘nature documentary’. It has a unique geology and is known for its wild natural beauty and vast aggregations of wildlife.
As the Wildlife Ranger, you will implement a diverse work program, including wildlife monitoring with a focus on seabirds. You will also support the Ranger in Charge in the delivery of a range of operational programs and services, including assisting with the management of educational tourist visits, conducting biosecurity operations and liaising about station construction projects.
Hours per fortnight
76.0 hours per fortnight (minimum 60.8 hours, by negotiation).
Period of appointment
The deployment will be for approximately 12 months from March 2027 to April 2028 (subject to shipping). It is likely that the position will start on 1 February 2027 for pre-deployment training and other preparation in Hobart. Prior to being appointed to the role, the preferred applicant must meet mandatory Australian Antarctic Division requirements, including thorough medical, psychological and behavioural assessments.
What we are looking for
Applicants need to have experience in leading wildlife monitoring and have a demonstrated capacity to work effectively and harmoniously in a small team, preferably in remote locations. It is really important for Macquarie Island rangers to be resilient and tolerant of others, be able to cope with uncertainty, undertake challenging field work in difficult and cold conditions, and be happy to live and work remotely.
Position requirements
Successful applicants will be required to pass medical, psychological, and behavioural assessments before being appointed to a position, and may be required to undergo additional physical training prior to working on Macquarie Island.
The selection panel may require the written approval of applicants with previous Macquarie Island experience to access the results of their past Australian Antarctic Division expeditioner performance reviews. The selection panel may also require applicants to undertake a behavioural and adaptability assessment as part of the interview process.
A departmental physical assessment (pre-deployment and post-deployment) is also required.

Essential requirements
- Be certified as fit for Macquarie Island service by the Australian Antarctic Division’s Polar Medicine Unit following tests conducted on its behalf by a nominated medical practitioner.
- Be rated as suitable for Macquarie Island service by the Australian Antarctic Division’s Polar Medicine Unit following psychological and behavioural assessments conducted on its behalf by a nominated professional provider.
- Provide First Aid certificate.
- Holder of a current motor vehicle driver's licence.
Desirable requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification.
- Relevant experience in the management of sub-Antarctic reserved areas or similar land management reserves experience would be an advantage.
- An ‘A’ or ‘R’ class Australian Bird and Bat Banding Scheme (ABBBS) banding authority (or relevant experience allowing one to be obtained before deployment to Macquarie Island).
- A Wilderness First Aid Certificate.
- A current RePL drone licence and have applicable experience operating and maintaining drone equipment in remote locations.
