The Tasmanian Cardiothoracic Unit is seeking suitable applicants for the 2027 training year as an Unaccredited Registrar in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Tasmanian Cardiothoracic Unit.  The unit is based at the Royal Hobart Hospital and serves as a tertiary care facility for the entire state of Tasmania.   The unit manages a variety of cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures with the registrar having good all-round exposure to Cardiothoracic surgery.   The position involves peri-operative management of patients, outpatient clinics, operative surgery as well as teaching and supervising interns and medical students who rotate through the unit.  There are ample opportunities for research projects during the year.

Hobart is the capital city of Tasmanian and with a 1:3 on call, there is a good opportunity for work life balance as well as working towards a career in Cardiothoracic surgery.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is located in the beautiful waterfront city of Hobart, framed between the Derwent River and Kunanyi / Mt Wellington and offers access to fine dining, impressive arts and a wide choice of accommodation within a short commute. The city also provides a great starting point to explore Tasmania's pristine wilderness and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.

Salary

$138,978 - $194,675 per annum

Salary range is in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata), commencing from 1 February 2027 until 7 February 2028.

Please note, An opportunity available for commencement from 3 August 2026 - 18 month appointment negotiable for suitable applicant.)

Duties

  • The Registrar is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Registration or eligible for Registration with the Medical Board of Australia

  • Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)
