The Team

The Plaster service team includes a Band 5 Senior Orthopaedic Cast Technician, Band 4 Cast Technicians and Allied Health Assistant and it works closely with medical, nursing and physiotherapy colleagues.

The Plaster service sits within physiotherapy service of the THS-S enabling collaboration between health service settings to facilitate optimised patient outcomes across the patient healthcare journey.

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic Cast Technician to work as part of our busy Plaster Service Team providing optimum care for Tasmanian Health Service-South patients. The main components of the role is providing casting services to orthopaedic and plastics referred patients as well as Royal Hobart Hospital inpatients, GP referred outpatients and those requiring total contact casts.

  • Provision of the cast service is under direct and indirect supervision from medical practitioners, Senior Cast Technician and Musculoskeletal Team Leader Physiotherapist and in collaboration with physiotherapists, allied health assistants and other cast technicians. 

The scope of this role includes:

  • Preparation, application, removal and modification and moulding of casts, performing complex technical work including the positioning of fractured limbs and undertake simple wound care
  • Patient education regarding proper care
  • Accurately documentation and collect activity data
  • Ensure standard precautions and maintain the cleanliness and security of the Cast Room
  • Liaise effectively with other members of the health care team.

You will need

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the care, application and removal of castings including deformity correction modifications, fractures, ulcer protection and skin grafts.
  • Physical capacity to effectively assist with the handling and re-positioning of patients and the application of casts.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgement and flexibility and carry out safe working practices whilst working within a multidisciplinary team.

Details of appointment

Permanent part time, day worker position, working 22 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

Salary

$85,196 to $97,915 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2025.

Eligibility

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Certificate IV in Cast Technology, or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years’ cast technician experience.
