About the Role
The Department’s Complaints Management Oversight Unit (CMO) was established within the Office of the Secretary in early 2024 to strengthen oversight and governance of complaints across the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP).
The CMO Unit has played a central role in developing and a department-wide framework for complaint handling, supporting a consistent, transparent, and child-centred approach to the receipt, review, and resolution of complaints. The team monitors trends, undertakes regular data analysis to manage risk, and provides strategic advice to inform systemic improvement.
The CMO continues to be critical in shaping a culture and practice across DECYP that is committed to acting in the best interests of children and young people. The team works collaboratively across the Department, building strong partnerships to embed change, strengthen capability, and support continuous improvement in complaint handling.
Grounded in the Department’s shared values, the CMO takes a people-centred and trauma-informed approach to its work, supporting best practice in complaints management and recognising the value of complaints as a tool for learning, accountability, and improvement.
To support the effective operation of the Complaints Management Oversight Unit through high-quality policy development, analysis, and the provision of authoritative advice that promotes best-practice complaint handling and compliance with relevant legislation, including the Child and Youth Safe Organisations Act 2023. The role contributes to strategic initiatives that strengthen complaints management across DECYP and plays a key role in building capability, supporting stakeholder engagement, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. The Assistant Manager also assists in the day-to-day management of the Unit.
