Job description:
The position is responsible for the coordination and operational management of a range of Civil Law programs and services offered by Tasmania Legal Aid to ensure effective and efficient delivery of civil law, legal assistance and representation services support the Associate Director Civil Law and provide professional supervision to junior practitioners.
Civil Law Programs relevant to this position include:
• NDIS appeals
• Mental Health and Guardianship stream matters at the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
• General civil lawyers

Hours per fortnight
73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available.

Duties
- Coordinate the provision of Tasmania Legal Aid’s Civil Law programs in accordance with policies, procedures and regulations in consultation with and to support the Associate Director Civil Law.
- Provide high level legal advice and program related support to staff, clients and stakeholders.
- Provide professional advice, guidance, training and instruction to legal practitioners to support the achievement of effective program outcomes.
- Have the carriage and conduct of complex and critical civil matters before the Courts and Tribunals.
- In consultation with the Associate Director Civil Law:
- develop, implement and review service delivery improvement initiatives, programs and strategic priorities.
- undertake aspects of staff management including leave, performance and training to strengthen Tasmania Legal Aid’s service delivery capabilities in accordance with delegations.
- Establish and maintain relationships with Tasmania Legal Aid’s community, industry, state and national stakeholders to enhance Tasmania Legal Aid’s work and promote holistic assistance for clients within its Civil Law programs.
- Participate in stakeholder meetings and working groups as requested.
- Prepare reports as required by Tasmania Legal Aid or under funding agreements.
- Undertake legal research to assist in the development of program policy and legislation to support law reform and complex legal matters relating to the civil jurisdiction.
- Engage in service development, outreach and other community legal education activities.
- Perform such other professional legal work within Tasmanian Legal Aid as required.
Essential Requirements
- Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the Federal Courts of Australia.
- A current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People.
Desirable Requirements
- A Legal Practitioner with more than 5 years’ relevant post-admission experience.
- Practical experience in managing or supervising others
- Advocacy experience in civil litigation at tribunal and court level
- Current Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence
