Job description:

The Tasmanian Prison Service is hiring a Psychologist to assess and treat offenders with complex needs. This role involves conducting assessments, managing at-risk offenders, and collaborating with staff to provide effective interventions. The position requires a registered psychologist with experience in correctional settings, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to maintain therapeutic relationships. Based at Risdon Prison, this role offers the chance to significantly impact inmate rehabilitation and wellbeing.

Details of Appointment

This is a fixed-term day work position working weekdays, commencing 29 April 2025 for a period of up to 13 months or until the substantive returns to the position. Benefits

Salary of $110,425 to $121,907 pa. Starting salary negotiable within range subject to experience in a similar role. Annual salary increase within this range in accordance with Agreement ​​Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement​ No. 2 of 2022

Working Environment

Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) has prison facilities located at Risdon Vale, Hobart and Launceston in Tasmania. This position is based at Risdon Vale. The Risdon Vale site offers a corporate working environment without the hustle and bustle of city centre offices, free on-site parking and access to the on-site staff gym (or head across the road to Risdon Brook Dam for a walk at lunch time). 

Duties

  • Provide psychological assessment, treatment or interventions as required for offenders with complex or special needs within the Prison.
  • Develop, foster, co-ordinate and monitor the involvement of other staff and agencies in the provision of interventions for these inmates.
  • Provide advice to the Risk Intervention Team and actively participate in processes relating to the identification of at risk prisoners.
  • Identify and assist in training requirements for Corrections staff in relation to management and interventions required for inmates with special needs.
  • Assist in sentence planning and other processes informed by assessments as required.
  • Participate in supervision, peer review and continuing professional development and risk management practices.
  • Assist with and participate in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement, risk management, ethical research activities and other strategies consistent with best practice as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Person to be registered by the Psychology Board of Australia under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law

Desirable Requirements

  • Post graduate qualifications or experience in clinical psychology.
