Job description:

Provide quality specialist and subspecialty medical services to the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) within the limits of specified clinical privileges.

The Team:

The orthopaedic unit currently consists of 8 orthopaedic surgeons, 1 fellow, 2 accredited trainees, 3 non- accredited registrars, JMO's and interns.

Orthopaedics is a busy unit servicing northern Tasmania, providing specialist care in upper and lower limb surgery, joint arthroplasty and paediatrics. The role includes both elective and emergency surgery, outpatient clinics, and an on-call component.

The unit is a cohesive and engaging team. There are opportunities for involvement in education and research available through the University of Tasmania and Clifford Craig research centre.

The Role:

  • Responsible to the Director of Surgical and Perioperative Services for the provision of specialist orthopaedic medical services to public and private patients of the LGH.
  • Responsible for junior medical staff and medical students attached to the Unit.
  • Required to operate independently, acting within clinical privileges, as defined.
  • Work unsupervised but liaises closely with professional colleagues and the Director of Surgical and Perioperative Services.
  • Follow recommended practices according to Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s Guidelines and Standards, Hospital Guidelines and Department of Surgical and Perioperative Guidelines, Policies and Protocols.

Details of appointment:

  • Fixed term, part time, day worker position, working up to 20 hours per fortnight, commencing from October 2026 for a three year period. *notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Salary:

Visiting Medical Practitioners Level 1- Visiting Medical Specialists Level 4 $254,149 - $445,341 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Agreement 2019

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available

Eligibility:

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or equivalent
