Job description:

Provide compassionate personal and end-of-life care support in palliative services, assisting nursing staff with daily care and diversional programs.

The Team:

The Team at the Department of Health Tasmania works collaboratively to deliver high‑quality, person‑centred care within extended care settings. As an Extended Care Assistant, the team plays a vital role in supporting patients with daily living activities, promoting independence, dignity, and wellbeing. The team works closely with nurses, allied health professionals, and families to ensure safe, compassionate, and culturally respectful care, while contributing to a positive, supportive, and multidisciplinary workplace focused on recovery, continuity of care, and improved health outcomes.

The Role:

Under the supervision of the relevant nursing staff on duty, and in accordance with Agency policies and procedures, the Extended Care Assistant will:

  • Assist patients of the Whittle Palliative Care Unit with personal care needs, as directed by nursing staff.
  • Assist with care needs of the patient and families who are being cared for at end of life on Whittle Ward.
  • In consultation with the Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) and/or the Registered Nurse, will assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of a range of diversional therapy programs to assist with daily living.

You will need to:

  • Assist the NUM/Registered Nurse to design, implement and evaluate a range of diversional therapy programs that assist the patients with daily living.
  • Assist nursing staff with manual handling, ensuring to comply with safe manual handling techniques and/or the operational instructions of lifting equipment.
  • Under the direction of nursing staff, assist in the activities of daily living for patient, including showering, toileting, grooming and feeding.

Details of appointment:

Two permanent full time shift worker (fully rotational) positions, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

One permanent part time shift worker (fully rotational) position, working 22.8 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $63,110 to $66,049 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.
