Job description:

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys hands‑on laboratory work, values accuracy, and wants to develop (or further develop) specialist skills in cytology. You’ll be involved in preparing and examining gynaecological and non‑gynaecological cytology specimens, and you’ll also contribute to the Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) service.

We're seeking a motivated individual to join our Cytology team. This role is best suited to recent graduates or individuals looking to build a career in diagnostic cytology. The role will suit those with a willingness to learn and work under supervision, strong attention to detail and good communication and organisational skills. Training and mentorship will be provided with the aim to sit the CT(ASC) exams in 2-3 years. Previous experience working in a diagnostic cytology laboratory would be an advantage.

The Team:

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital, and the Cytology team operates within the Anatomical Pathology Department, which provides diagnostic pathology services for patients across southern Tasmania and statewide specialist referrals. The team works closely with clinicians across specialties to support diagnosis, monitoring, and management of diseases, especially cancers and other cellular disorders. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Role:

You’ll be involved in preparing and examining gynaecological and non‑gynaecological cytology specimens, and you’ll also contribute to the Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA) service. 

In the role of Medical Scientist - Cytology you will: 

  • Prepare and examine cytology specimens for inpatient and outpatient services

  • Participate in the FNA service, including specimen preparation in clinical settings

  • Follow laboratory procedures, quality standards, and national guidelines

  • Take part in internal reviews, continuing education, and external quality assurance programs

  • Assist with equipment maintenance, consumables, and evaluation of new equipment or reagents

  • Support routine histology procedures when required

  • A commitment to ongoing learning and maintaining up‑to‑date knowledge

  • Experience in cytology, ThinPrep, or FNA services is desirable, but not essential — training and support will be provided

Details of appointment:

Permanent part time, day worker position, working 45.6 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. 

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $73,834 to $111,364 per annum (pro-rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022.

Salary Packaging:

You’ll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible. 

Allowances:

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum

Benefits available to eligible candidates:

  • Travel and relocation assistance support may be available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Satisfactory completion of a Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science from a recognised tertiary institution.

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • CT(ASC) Competency Certificate in Gynaecological and Non-Gynaecological Cytology. 

  • ThinPrep Liquid-based Cytology Certificate of Completion.

  • Experience participating in a Fine Needle Aspirate Service.
