The Role: 

Plastic Surgery Fellowship

The role involves a mix of the following objectives: 

  • The undertaking of approved plastic surgical services in outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Participation in the after-hours Registrar/Consultant on-call rosters.
  • Provision of leadership and mentoring for surgical registrars and RMOs in training.
  • Assisting with quality improvement, audit and service improvement with the Department of Surgery. There is an expectation to be involved with other teaching and research activities with the plastic surgery unit.
  • Within position objectives described above, the Fellow is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the LGH Plastic Surgery unit. This includes rostered afterhours cover at the hospital.
  • The Fellowship position offers in-depth exposure to a general plastic surgical scope in a regional setting. The encounters include a large quantity of trauma (soft tissue, upper limb, maxillofacial, burns), skin cancer and reconstruction, head and neck surgery, upper limb surgery, breast surgery, reconstructive microsurgery, and aesthetic surgery (accessible by assisting private lists).
  • The Fellow contributes to elective operating with Fellow-led lists with the expectation to work independently with Consultant oversight and direct assistance when required.
  • A Fellow clinic occurs fortnightly and in addition the plastics clinics and walk-in trauma clinics will be attended by the Fellow. Private clinics can also be attended by the Fellow and access to private assisting is facilitated in the roster.
  • The Fellow is to attend and contribute to the educational program which includes weekly teaching, medical student teaching, bed-side teaching, unit and departmental Morbidity and Mortality meetings, head and neck MDT meetings, and at monthly journal clubs.
  • Consultant-led Registrar teaching is rostered weekly with topics also contributed to by the Fellow.
  • Teaching opportunities include participation at the fortnightly Head and Neck MDT meetings and the rotating monthly unit and departmental Morbidity and Mortality meetings.
  • The Fellow will be immediately stimulated to participate in research. The expectation is for a minimum presentation or poster for the Tasmanian Scientific Meeting or RACS ASM or at the biannual Plastic Surgical Congress. Fellows interested in starting new research lines will be encouraged.

  • Broad exposure to Plastic Surgery including operating, emergencies and clinic.
  • The role is well supported clinically with additional teaching and research opportunities.
  • The welcoming community surrounding the hospital consists of natural scenery garnished with wineries, markets and distilleries and entertaining world class outdoor activities.
  • Close contact with consultant staff.
  • Limited evenings and weekends on call.
  • The Fellow contributes to the Registrar roster on call for evenings and weekends on a 1:4-1:5 basis. When appropriate, the Fellow may also cover the Consultant roster with a second Consultant on call for suitable cases.

Details of appointment:

Fixed term full time, day worker (with on-call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 1 February 2027 until 6 February 2028.

You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata.

Salary:

Registrars 

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $134,930 - $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available 

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year.
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $3,183 per annum, pro rata 
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.
