Job description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest for 2026 Advanced Trainees Geriatric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest for 2026 Advanced Trainees Geriatric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

The Royal Hobart Hospital is a tertiary hospital in southern Tasmania, serving a population of 300,000.

The Aged Care Department is accredited for 4 Advanced Trainee positions, each of 12-24 months duration. The position is suitable as core training for Advanced Trainees in Geriatrics or non-core training for Advanced Trainees in General Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Palliative Care or Emergency Medicine.

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) also has many other accredited registrar training positions, including General Medicine, Palliative Care and Older Persons Mental Health, which advanced trainees in Aged Care could undertake as non-Core training.

The successful applicant will be working with of a team of junior doctors and Consultants. The aged care department has an establishment of 9 FTE registrar positions which includes the advanced trainees in geriatrics. These positions are supported by interns in acute geriatrics and in orthogeriatrics; and 5 resident medical officers across the subacute services. There is strong collegiality, stability, and energy within the group of 17 geriatricians.

The Aged Care department has 112 inpatient beds - 60 acute beds, 42 subacute beds (Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM)), plus 10 beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow stream rehabilitation. There is an additional GEM at Home service. The Aged Care specialists provide multiple services to inpatients (including a consultative service and shared care orthogeriatrics model of 10-20 patients), outpatient clinics (including regional TAZREACH Outreach clinics), education to undergraduates/allied health/nursing/postgraduates as well as research. We provide an excellent training program for our Advanced Trainee/s, and in addition are linked with the Victorian training programme.

 Preferences for rotations will be discussed between the trainees and Director of Clinical Teaching in Aged Care prior to commencement, considering educational objectives.

Salary

$134,930 - $189,005 per annum.

  • Additional 3% base rate on call allowance plus overtime,

Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata), commencing 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027 (24 months negotiable).

Note: (part time hours may be considered), 

On call roster 1:11.

Duties

The Advanced Trainee is responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the Hospital and provides after-hours emergency cover at the hospital as required.

Highly Desirable:

Having passed the written and practical RACP exams or equivalent for relevant College.

Essential Requirements

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).

1.  Conviction checks in the following areas:
