The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for an Ophthalmology Unaccredited Registrar vacancy at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School and provides most public specialist medical services for southern Tasmania.
The Royal Hobart Hospital Ophthalmology Department has consultants with a broad range of subspecialty interests including vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, glaucoma, oculoplastics, cornea, paediatric ophthalmology and genetic eye disease.
The Eye Clinic is well-appointed with up-to-date facilities and equipment. The Ophthalmology Department provides an active teaching and research program in conjunction with the University of Tasmania.
The unaccredited ophthalmology registrar roster includes subspecialty and general ophthalmology clinics, laser clinics, injection clinics and operating theatre sessions. The registrar will work in a team with 3 accredited Ophthalmology trainees and take part in the 1 in 4 after-hours on-call roster.

Salary
$134,930 - $189,005 per annum
Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Period of Employment
Fixed term, full time day work, working 76 hours per fortnight plus 10 hours protected training time (pro rata), commencing 2 February 2026 until 1 February 2027.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Duties
The Registrar is responsible for the day-to-day management of public and private inpatients and outpatients within the allocated site/facility and the provision of after-hours emergency care as determined by the relevant work unit.

Essential Requirements
- General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
1. Conviction checks in the following areas: a) Crimes of Violence b) Sex Related Offences c) Serious Drug Offences d) Crimes involving dishonesty 2. Identification check 3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
