Job description:

Provide regional leadership and management of the North West Rural Generalist (RG) trainee workforce in alignment with the strategic direction of the Tasmanian Rural Generalist pathway collaborative. Support and lead, where required, quality improvement activities in RG training sites. Support and deliver undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and training across THS – North West. Work collaboratively with key state and national stakeholders in implementing the program with an initial focus on developing the RG workforce model at the MCH hub. Develop the North West arm of the Rural Generalist program, enabling a clear pathway for undergraduate and junior medical officers to progress through accredited RG training to fellowship, actively engaging with clinicians working in primary care, district hospitals and community general practice.

Who Are We Looking For?

This position will be attractive to highly skilled and motivated medical professional who’s passion is regional healthcare with a core focus on embedding an integrated specialist rural generalist model of care into existing specialist college models.

The successful candidate will:

  • Support the Office Executive Director of Medical Services in medical administration of the service and view challenges as opportunities, driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems.
  • Provide regional leadership and management of the North West Rural Generalist (RG) trainee workforce in alignment with the strategic direction of the Tasmanian Rural Generalist pathway collaborative.
  • Support and lead, where required, quality improvement activities in RG training sites. Support and deliver undergraduate and post-graduate medical education and training across THS – North West.
  • Work collaboratively with key state and national stakeholders in implementing the program with an initial focus on developing the RG workforce model at the MCH hub.
  • Develop the North West arm of the Rural Generalist program, enabling a clear pathway for undergraduate and junior medical officers to progress through accredited RG training to fellowship, actively engaging with clinicians working in primary care, district hospitals and community general practice.

The right applicant will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels. The DoH offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School.  As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate general medical education program and establishment of an effective pipeline to service the Rural Generalist Pathway Program.

Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the THS North West has major sites, North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) and Mersey Community Hospital (MCH), located approximately 50km apart. The NWRH is the regional trauma centre and has inpatient general medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ICU and mental health. Both departments operate a VST telemedicine program for acute stroke presentations.  The MCH is a subacute hospital with limited general medicine inpatient services, and inpatient rehabilitation unit.  Both EDs have excellent access to 24 hour pathology and 24 hour radiology services (on call between 11pm and 7am).  Staffing is equivalent across both sites and consists of Staff Specialists, Registrars and Residents across a mix of accredited medical colleges.

Salary:

Specialist Medical Practitioners

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 - Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 -$310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available 

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Provision of a motor vehicle allowance of $22,711 per annum based on the 60.8 hour fortnight
  • Allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%
  • North West Retention Allowance 20%

Eligibility:

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

  • Holds specialist registration; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
  • Current Driver’s Licence

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered. 

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or Fellowship of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners – Rural Generalist (FRACGP-RG) or Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators
  • Ability to be credentialed as a Rural Generalist with an additional advanced rural skill in one or more of the following disciplines. Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Mental Health, Palliative Care or other recognised advanced rural skill.
