Assist with the provision of paediatric and neonatal services within Women's and Children's Services across the North West Region.

The Team:

Tasmania is home to 114,058 children and young people aged between 0 and 17 years. Geographically, children and young people are distributed across Tasmania and about a quarter of the statewide population of children (0-17 years) live in the North West.

The North West Regional Hospital at Burnie in Tasmania is a modern 160 bed facility providing high quality health care and specialist services to North West Tasmania and King Island. It offers services in medical, surgical, and allied health specialties through inpatient and outpatient departments. The

hospital caters for the emergency resuscitation, surgery and intensive care of most trauma patients and other medical conditions. North West Regional Hospital is accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards. As North West Regional Hospital is a secondary level service, transfer to comprehensive tertiary hospitals occurs for some injuries and illnesses. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Paediatric Department, Tasmanian Health Service - North West Region (THS-NW Region) provides services to North West Regional Hospital (Burnie), Mersey Community Hospital (Latrobe), North West Private Hospital (Maternity and Neonatal Service - Burnie), as well as outreach services at Smithton, King Island, Queenstown, Rosebery, and Child and Family Learning Centres (Burnie and East Devonport).

The maternity service run by the Tasmania Health Service in the North West Private Hospital provides inpatient birthing services in North West Tasmania and is accredited by the World Health Organisation Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.

The NWRH Paediatric Ward has approximately 1000 admissions per annum. There are approximately 1000 births a year with around 150 - 200 admissions to the Special Care Nursery.

The Paediatric registrar has regular outpatient clinics and the rural / regional nature of the hospital allows the doctor, with appropriate supervision, to manage a broad spectrum of clinical conditions. They also have the opportunity to be involved with multidisciplinary asthma / allergy and behavioural / neurodevelopmental clinics and attend specialist clinics – rehabilitation, cardiology, diabetes, endocrinology, and oncology clinics. The Department of Paediatrics provides a community outreach service which also provides learning and training opportunities for basic and advanced trainees. There are regular teaching sessions for registrars.

The Department of Paediatrics has been granted full accreditation for Advanced Specialised Training in Paediatrics by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and has full RACP Accreditation for General Paediatrics (Rural) with a perinatal component (general paediatrics, acute care, community and developmental paediatrics).

The Role:

  • Assessment and management of paediatric and neonatal patients (outpatients and inpatients), attendance at deliveries and management of neonatal and paediatric emergencies.
  • After hour on-call paediatric registrar duties on-site.
  • Undertake neonatal and paediatric procedures, including assessment and management of paediatric patients requiring procedural sedation.
  • Discharge planning and discharge summaries compliant with policy to ensure safe clinical handover to community-based care providers.
  • Involvement in quality assurance, educational, supervision and clinical governance activities, as well as participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.

Details of appointment:

  • Fixed term full time, shift worker (fully rotational) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from 13 January 2025 until 1 February 2026.
  • Registrars only: You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata.

Salary:

Registrars 

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $131,000 - $183,500 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

Eligibility:

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

    • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia

    • Enrolled in the relevant speciality training program

    • Current Working with Children Registration

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.
