Why Tasmania?

It’s different here.

Life in Tasmania provides a quality work/life balance. Here you can pursue what drives you, both professionally and personally.

Today, as the rest of the world feels increasingly generic, our different-ness – our Tasmanian-ness – is among our most valuable assets. We invite you to be part of this special place, to quietly pursue the extraordinary, whether it be bushwalking, mountain biking or paddock to plate dining.

The rugged and beautiful North West Coast of Tasmania is a tourist mecca, has a strong agricultural sector, a developing innovative industrial sector and is positioned with airports and sea transport so it is very accessible to the rest of Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Air travel from Devonport to Melbourne is less than one hour.

Tasmanian | The quiet pursuit of the extraordinary

Who Are We Looking For?

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Staff Specialist Paediatrician, who will work as part of the Paediatric Department across the North West region.

The Paediatrics department provides a consultative service supported by inpatient and outpatient services, as well as outreach services located at regional centres which include the West Coast District Hospital, Smithton District Hospital and King Island District Hospital and Devonport Community Health. The NWRH provides a neonatal service and busy inpatient service. The MCH provides an ever increasing general, behavioural and community paediatrics service. The current senior staffing mix includes full time and part time Specialists with excellent Registrar and JMO support, in addition the NWRH is accredited with the RACP for Registrar training. This position will be attractive to highly skilled and motivated medical professionals who view challenges as opportunities and is driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicants will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels.

Who are we?

Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the Department of Health – North West (DoH), has major sites located approximately 50km apart.

The medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe, close to Devonport.

The North West Private Hospital is co-located with the NWRH and this facilitates private practice for many of the region’s specialists.

The DoH offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School.  As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate medical education program.
