Job description:

The position provides representation and advice in Safe at Home Program and Family Law and Child Safety (Children Young Persons and Their Families Act) matters. This includes: • Assistance to support the development of the whole-of-government response to family violence. • Community legal education, outreach and engagement. • Representation, advice and assistance to litigants in the Magistrates Court and the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA).

Period of Appointment

3 years.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available. 

Duties

  • Provide basic legal advice, information, guidance and support to clients and/or their support persons regarding the law, their rights and legal processes in family violence matters and family law matters across Tasmania.
  • Provide duty lawyer services in the Magistrates Court.
  • Provide representation pursuant to a Grant of Legal Aid funding in the Magistrates Court and FCFCOA.
  • Promote Programs to relevant stakeholder groups and service providers and participate in meetings and working groups as requested.
  • Provide outreach community legal education and information and participate in meetings and working groups to support service development.
  • Assist senior legal practitioners with research, preparation, drafting of program policy, legislation and reports to support law reform, legal matters and funding agreements and other appropriate legal tasks.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Essential Requirements

  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Tasmania and the relevant Federal courts.
  • Current Tasmanian Registration Working with Vulnerable People (Registration Status-Employment).
