Job description:

Provide administrative and technical support to Herbarium staff and volunteers, including managing formal regulations governing the accession and movement of herbarium specimens. Provide high-level front-of-house services to staff, stakeholders, clients and visitors to the Herbarium facility.

Tasmanian Herbarium

The Tasmanian Herbarium is the unit of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery responsible for botanical collections. These preserved plant specimens are the most comprehensive record of the Tasmanian flora and number in excess of 300,000 items. All major plant groups are represented, including vascular plants and cryptogams (lichens, bryophytes, fungi and algae).

Duties

  • Provide essential day-to-day administrative and front-of-house support to the Herbarium, including receiving and processing public, institutional and government requests for Herbarium services.
  • Be responsible for compliance issues relating to herbarium collections as determined by International, Federal and State regulations, including AQIS, CITES, collecting permits and the Foreign Arrangements scheme.
  • Manage the formal program of loans and exchanges of specimens in accordance with international protocols and legislative requirements and provide specimen data extracts and other herbarium products and services to researchers, collaborators and other clients.
  • Provide technical support for curatorial and research activities, including the interpretation and digitisation of specimen collecting data, and the preparation of specimens for curation and filing.
  • Manage all aspects of the Herbarium facility's security, maintenance and safety. Develop, maintain and manage the delivery of a comprehensive project plan, incorporating strategies, timeframes, risk assessments and reporting stages.
  • Provide regular reports to the Head of Herbarium on specimen acquisition and the delivery of herbarium services.
