Job description:

Undertake mechanical repairs, maintenance tasks, servicing and preventative maintenance of fire management equipment and the operational and support vehicle fleet. Assist in the commissioning and decommissioning of operational and support vehicles.

The Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM) specialises in the fabrication, commissioning, decommissioning and maintenance of the DPFEM operational and support vehicles.  The Engineering and Fleet Services branch employ 47 staff statewide who are committed to providing the highest quality fleet assets for our emergency services workers.  DPFEM prides itself on providing job security and work life balance to all our employees. 

 

Duties

In this role no two days are the same.  Your job tasks can vary from working on a Heavy Pumper (pictured above) for our Fire Service, commissioning a police vehicle, assisting with wildfire response or being out in the field completing scheduled servicing and repairs.

You will never be short of opportunities to learn new skills or to challenge your technical knowledge.

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair and test drive a wide range of DPFEM fleet vehicles, including cars, light to heavy trucks and fire appliances.
  • Maintain and support firefighting equipment, such as, rescue tools, pumps, foam systems and aerial ignition equipment.
  • Installation, commissioning, maintenance and removal of communication and electronic equipment fitted to vehicles.
  • Carry out modification and refurbishments to the vehicle fleet as required.
  • Maintain vehicle log books and job sheets.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and service programs in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Essential Requirements

Pre-Employment Checks 

The Head of the State Service has determined that a person nominated for appointment to this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer. Any relevant serious criminal offence or repeated serious offences over any period, which are not mitigated by additional information, may provide grounds for declining an application for appointment. Such offences would include, but are not limited to:

  • Arson and fire setting;
  • Sexual offences;
  • Dishonesty (e.g. theft, burglary, breaking and entering, fraud);
  • Deception (e.g. obtaining an advantage by deception);
  • Making false declarations;
  • Violent crimes and crimes against the person;
  • Malicious damage and destruction to property
  • Trafficking of narcotic substance;
  • False alarm raising. 

The successful candidate will possess 

  • A certificate IV in automotive mechanics or equivalent is desirable.
  • Proven competence and contemporary experience in vehicle repairs and servicing.
  • Knowledge of pump systems and related electrical work.
  • Ability to acquire or experience with maintenance and operation of fire suppression and fire ignition equipment.
  • Work as an effective team member in an environment of sensitivity, confidentiality which subject to competing priorities, deadlines and change.
  • Sound interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • A manual driver’s licence, medium rigid licence and forklift licence are desirable but not essential.
