Job description:

In this role, you will be supervising and coordinating carpentry trades staff to ensure effective and efficient services are provided.

The Team:

Launceston General Hospital (LGH) is one of Tasmania’s major public hospitals, providing comprehensive healthcare services to the northern region of the state.

Working across the LGH facility and surrounding precinct the Carpentry team are responsible for carrying out building maintenance, repair work and undertake minor construction projects where required on all Department of Health (DoH) buildings to appropriate standards to ensure safety of the public, staff and patients as well as assisting other staff as required in the day to day operations of the Facilities and Engineering Department.

All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare infrastructure to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Role:

The Senior Tradesperson (Carpenter) reports directly to the Site Coordinator, Facilities and Engineering and operates with a high level of independence in undertaking day-to-day activities. The occupant:

  • Provides leadership for the Carpentry Trades to ensure a highly cohesive team that can efficiently service health care facilities including a complex hospital environment within the Department’s work responsibility area.
  • Is responsible for supervising carpentry trade staff, contractors and consultants as appropriate.
  • Communicates professionally with internal staff within the Facilities and Engineering Team and externally to a variety of consultants, contractors, suppliers, Manufactures and other Government Agencies when required.
  • Ensures compliance with Work Health and Safety Legislation and Australian Standards.
  • Champions a child safe culture that upholds the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations. The Department is committed to the safety, wellbeing, and empowerment of all children and young people, and expect all employees to actively participate in and contribute to our rights-based approach to care, including meeting all mandatory reporting obligations.
  • At all times complies with policy and protocol requirements, including those relating to mandatory education, training and assessment.

You will need:

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise own work and the work of other trades staff to accomplish project timeframes and make responsible recommendations along with the ability to keep and maintain records.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with staff at all levels from various organisations along with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated sound experience in, and extensive knowledge of, carpentry trade services including the ability to modify, commission, repair and maintain services and equipment within a health care environment.

Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Position Features: 

  • This role requires on-call availability and offers attractive renumeration for both standby availability and callback duties.
  • Travel may be a requirement of this role as work may be performed at other offsite facilities across Northern Tasmania.

Salary: $81,915 to $94,263 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria with relevant Trade Qualification.

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Certificate III Wood Machining.
  • Current Driver’s Licence.
  • Certified to erect scaffolding
