Job description:

We’re seeking a Specialist Medical Practitioner – Psychiatrist to join our dynamic Youth Mental Health Hospital in the Home (Y‑HiTH) team. In this leadership role, you’ll deliver trauma‑informed, recovery‑focused psychiatric care to young people aged 16–25, provide expert consultation to clinicians and partners, and guide the next generation of mental health professionals within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.

The Team

The Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) is a community-based, Statewide service supporting infants, children, young people (up to 18 years), and expectant mothers through its perinatal mental health service. CYMHS provides specialist assessment and treatment for a broad range of mental health concerns, including:

  • Attachment and mood disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Mental health issues during pregnancy and following birth
  • Psychosis
  • Severe emotional trauma and adjustment difficulties
  • Self-harm and suicide risk

The Role

Youth Psychiatrist – North West Tasmania

This specialist position plays a key role in supporting young people with complex mental health needs across the region.

1. Clinical Responsibilities

The Youth Psychiatrist provides comprehensive psychiatric assessment and treatment for young people across a variety of settings, including:

  • The CYMHS North West Youth Hospital in the Home (HITH) service, supporting young people aged 16–24 through intensive, short‑term, home‑based treatment as an alternative to inpatient care.

2. Multidisciplinary Practice

Working as part of a skilled and collaborative multidisciplinary team, the Youth Psychiatrist will:

  • Provide high-quality psychiatric care aligned with Mental Health Services principles, National Mental Health Standards, Agency policy, legal requirements, and professional competencies.
  • Act as a consultant to mental health clinicians, general practitioners, and other service providers regarding assessment, treatment planning, and management of young people with mental health disorders.
  • Provide clinical supervision and support to Psychiatric Registrars and other medical staff as required.

Position Features:

  • Participate in an On Call Roster and undertake call back work
  • Work outside normal hours and weekend work, which may include ward round as required
  • Intrastate travel may be required

 Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary:

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 -$310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available 

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year.
  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle.
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 per annum
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.
  • Professional development and accelerated pathways.
  • A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $13.95 per week per person, or $25.95 for a family.

Eligibility:

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty (Psychiatry)
  • Current Working with Children Registration

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Current Driver’s Licence
  • Supervisor’s Certificate or equivalent
  • Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; or
  • Certificate of Advance Training in Adult Psychiatry
