Job description:

Provide microbiological services to the Department of Health (DoH), government agencies, industry and the general public.

The Team:

The Microbiologist (532668) position is based in the South and serves the broader northern region of Tasmania, delivering NATA-accredited Water and Food microbiological testing services to the Department of Health (DoH), other government agencies, industry and the general public.

The microbiology team comprises:

  • Laboratory Manager
  • Microbiologists
  • Technicians

Together, they form a collaborative and professional unit focused on:

  • Food and water microbiological testing

The team values scientific excellence, leadership, and interdepartmental collaboration, contributing to Tasmania’s broader public health goals. The role also supports strategic initiatives, with opportunities for scientific and management responsibilities, professional development, and engagement with scientific education and research.

The Role:

Provide microbiological services to the Department of Health (DoH), government agencies, industry and the general public. The service shall include examination of food, water and other materials, the preparation and presentation of reports on the examinations, and the provision of advice on public health microbiological matters.

You will need to:

  • Conduct microbiological tests for a broad range of bacteria on food and water samples.
  • Liaise with clients and other members of the public service.
  • Perform quality assurance monitoring to National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) standards.
  • Assist in the maintenance of protocols, equipment, quality control and supplies of consumables to ensure an uninterrupted service as far as possible.
  • Keep records and prepare test reports.
  • Provide professional supervision and training of technical staff, when required.
  • Assist in development and documentation of testing methods.

Details of appointment:

Fixed term, part time, shift worker position, working 45.6 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible for a period of twelve months.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $73,834 to $111,364 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022.

Allowances: 

  • In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 
  • Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • A tertiary qualification majoring in Microbiology, including microbiology subjects relevant to food and water microbiology.
  • Eligible for Professional membership with the Australian Society for Microbiology

Position Features:

  • Position is shiftwork and requires Saturday shifts specifically.
  • This position involves handling known microbial pathogens such as Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp. (especially relevant to pregnant females)
