The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist Cardiac Anaesthetist vacancy.
Applications are sought for Specialist Anaesthetists with subspecialty expertise in cardiac anaesthesia and a strong general clinical background, including experience in teaching and quality assurance in a public hospital setting. The successful applicant would be expected to participate in general anaesthetic clinical duties as well as cardiac anaesthesia.

The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM) provides a comprehensive range of general and specialist clinical anaesthesia services including trauma, paediatric surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, vascular and obstetrics specialities. Anaesthesia services are also provided for Interventional Cardiology, Endoscopy Unit and Medical Imaging Department including Interventional Radiology, CT/MRI and PET scan. We also provide an Acute Pain Service and Perioperative Medicine service.
The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine is a high-quality specialist teaching department with significant research activity. We participate in multi-centre research trials and encourage local research. We have strong links with University of Tasmania Faculty of Health Science and the Menzies Research Centre.

The Role
- Provide clinical services in Anaesthesia and Perioperative Services including diagnosis, treatment and care for patients within the Southern area, both inpatients and outpatients.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs.
- Undertake research in the area of anaesthesia and perioperative care.
- Participate in an out of hours On-Call Roster.
- Actively pursue improvements in clinical support areas as allocated by the Director.
- Participate in such Hospital committees and administrative matters as required by the Director - Department of Anaesthesia & Perioperative Medicines.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
- Observe all hospital bylaws and statutory regulations.

Salary
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award
A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.
- Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award
Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
- Relocation allowance.
- On call allowance % of Base Salary.
- All other allowances as per current Award.
- And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata, of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment
Fixed term full-time or part-time day work (with on-call), working at least 38 hours and up to maximum 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible until February 2028.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Essential Requirements
- Holds specialist registration; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
- Conviction checks in the following areas:
- Crimes of violence
- Sex related offences
- Serious drug offences
- Crimes involving dishonesty
- Identification check
- Disciplinary action in previous employment check

Desirable requirements
- Recognition as an Anaesthetist by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) holding FANZCA or equivalent.
- Clinical exposure at a tertiary hospital standard within the last 12 months
- Recent fellowship or consultant practice in cardiac anaesthesia
- Ability to perform and interpret comprehensive intraoperative trans-oesophageal echocardiography, with completion or near-completion of an appropriate training program
