The Social Work Assistant team at the Department of Health in Australia plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of health and social care services. These professionals work under the supervision of qualified social workers to assist individuals, families, and communities in navigating health systems and accessing essential services.

The Social Work service is a large and dynamic team of dedicated Social Workers and assistants working across the acute hospital, subacute and community settings promoting equity of access to health services.

The Social Work Assistant (SWA) role is vital within the Department of Health for several key reasons, particularly as part of the broader allied health and social care system in Australia:
Enhancing Patient Care and Support
Social Work Assistants help bridge the gap between clinical care and social support. They assist qualified social workers in addressing the biopsychosocial and emotional needs of patients, which are crucial for holistic health outcomes.
Reducing Systemic Pressure
By handling administrative and support tasks—such as coordinating referrals to community services, supporting patients to view residential aged care facilities, SWAs free up time for social workers to focus on complex clinical and therapeutic interventions.
You will need:
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team that works from a person-centred approach
- A drivers licences is recommended
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in patient/client care, with an ability to assist patients/clients to meet their psychosocial and practical needs whilst accessing the health care system.

Details of appointment:
Two permanent part time, day worker positions, working 30.4 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.
Salary: $67,193 to $72,126 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 11.5% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.

Eligibility:
Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:
- Knowledge and understanding of health and community-based resources
- Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent qualification
- Experience in direct client/patient work in a health or human services setting
