This is a Police, Ambulance, Clinician Early Response (PACER) model—a partnership between Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS), Ambulance Tasmania, and Tasmania Police, designed to provide access to timely and appropriate mental health care. The service provides a joint response, where a mental health clinician, paramedic and police officer attend to mental health matters in the community.
The Role:
- Works in close partnership with nominated staff from Tasmania Police and Ambulance Tasmania to provide a timely response to people experiencing mental health emergencies in the community
- Plays a key role in developing the short-term management plan for the person experiencing mental health crisis, including directing the person’s mental health care on the scene and informing the decision-making process regarding relevant provisions of the Mental Health Act 2013 and transport to hospital.
- Promotes, advocates for, and actions least restrictive care principles within the Menta Health Emergency Response service.
You will need:
- Proven ability to undertake advanced comprehensive mental health and risk assessments of people experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and application of contemporary and evidence-based skills in relation to crisis intervention, including the formulation of safety plans and the provision of brief therapeutic interventions as required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant philosophies, such as trauma informed care and recovery principles and policies and procedures and associated legislation which impact upon the management of crises across the community.
- Proven high level interpersonal skills including oral and written communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and decision-making skills and the ability to communicate effectively with consumers, families/carer, colleagues and emergency service and hospital personnel, particularly in crisis situations.

Details of appointment:
Fixed term part time, shift worker position, working 40 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible for a period of approximately fifteen (15) months.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.
Salary: $114,851 to $121,886 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 11.5% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10 % based on qualification type

Experience in working in partnership with emergency services personnel in a manner that reflects a spirit of cooperation and collaboration, and respect for each other’s philosophy, priorities, knowledge, skills, and experience
