The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Psychiatrist vacancy for the Mental Health Services – South.

The role:

As part of a multidisciplinary mental health service delivering high quality mental health care and, in accordance with Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, Agency policy, legal requirements and relevant professional competencies, the Psychiatrist:

  • Provides comprehensive general inpatient and community psychiatric services in Tasmania.
  • Acts as a consultant to mental health professionals and health service providers, including general practitioners and other agencies, regarding the assessment and management of individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Undertakes supervisory responsibilities with Registrars/Career Medical Officers, Resident Medical Officers and other medical staff as required/appropriate.

State-wide Mental Health Services is a leader and innovator for a unique corner of the health care industry. We provide a comprehensive suite of services across the areas of mental health, alcohol and drugs, forensic mental health, and correctional primary health.
 
The Statewide Mental Health Service reforms are also providing expanding opportunities in services such as The Acute Care Team, Police, Ambulance and Clinical Early Response (PACER) and Hospital in the Home Teams. In partnership with the University of Tasmania, the Service has also recently established the Tasmanian Centre for Mental Health Service Innovation which is dedicated to helping enhance and improve mental health service offerings for children, young people, and adults across Tasmania. The Centre is being co-directed by Professor David Castle and Professor Brett McDermott and its activities will focus on workforce development, training and education, research and development, and policy and advocacy.
 
All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community. As part of a multidisciplinary Mental Health Service delivering high quality mental health care and in accordance with Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, Agency policy, legal requirements and relevant professional competencies.
 
Available roles for Staff Specialist – Psychiatrists include the provision of services in:
  • Community-based Mental Health Services, including the Acute Care Stream (ACS), the Continuing Care Stream (CCS), Mental Health Hospital in the Home (MHHiTH) with further new services in development.

  • The acute general adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIU) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

  • The general adult Consultation-Liaison (CL) psychiatric service in the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and associated facilities, including the Emergency Department (ED) and the Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSSU).

  • Residential facilities run by our Mental Health Service.

Details of Appointment

Permanent full time, day worker position (with on-call) working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible. 

*notwithstanding hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant

  • Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

Salary: $210,000 - $301,349 per annum. Our Employer 11% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioner Agreement 2022

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.
