Job description:

The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Plastic Surgery is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for the role of Plastic Surgeon to provide to Plastic Surgery patients.

The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Plastic Surgery is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for the role of Specialist Plastic Surgeon.

The role may be undertaken on a full or part-time basis as a staff specialist with rights to private practice within the health service, or on a part-time Visiting Medical Specialist basis with the ability to undertake private practice in the private sector.  This component may be negotiated by the successful applicant with the RHH Surgical and Perioperative Services.

Who are we?

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Department of Plastic Surgery also functions as the Tasmanian Burn Unit. The Department currently consists of 8 consultants, 4 Registrars, 1 RMO, and 1 Intern. The Department provides high level care for the entire spectrum of Plastic Surgical issues including, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery, Hand Surgery and Lower Limb Trauma to name a few.  The Department is a RACS accredited Training unit in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.

The Department is looking to expand our Breast Reconstruction Service and encourage applicants interested in Breast Surgery to apply for this position.

To be a strong candidate for the role you will hold specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Fellow of the Royal Australasia College of Surgeons (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).

The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate:

  • A successful track record of clinical service provision as a Plastic Surgeon.
  • The ability to manage patients within the discipline of Plastic Surgery and the ability to work with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven capacity for undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and the ability to undertake research activities.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and maintain good interpersonal relationships in dealing with patients, their relatives, and professional colleagues.

The Role

  1. Provide clinical services of the highest possible standard in Plastic Surgery including diagnosis, treatment and care for patients, both inpatient and outpatient at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), and where appropriate, other hospitals in Tasmania.
  2. Take part in the on-call roster and undertake call-back work.
  3. Work outside normal hours conducting weekend ward rounds as required.
  4. In consultation with other clinical services assist with the management of RHH patients.
  5. Actively pursue improved outcomes for Plastic Surgery patients by participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research relevant to Plastic Surgery.
  6. Participate in such Hospital committees and administrative matters as required by the Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director Medical Services, Clinical Services Surgery or Head of Department.
  7. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
  8. Observe all hospital policies and procedures and statutory regulations.
  9. Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation’s Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.
  10. The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.

Base Salary for Staff Specialists

$210,000 to $301,349 pro rata, per annum.

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $210,000 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $288,000 with further salary increments available.

  • Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $291,472 - $301,349 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available: 

  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full-time hours for at least three years) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $27,535 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,000 pro rata per annum.
  • On call allowance % of Base Salary.
  • All other allowances as per current Award.
  • And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on-call, pro rata) of additional payment will be paid from (PPS). If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

  • The Visiting Medical Specialists will be revised with the upcoming renegotiation of the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners Agreement 2019.
  • Maximum employed FTE under the VMP award is 0.47.

  • You will have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible.

Details of Appointment

Permanent, full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per hour commencing as soon as possible.
