The Team

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Senior Career Medical Officer vacancy for Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS), Adult Mental Health Services – South.  The Continuing Care Teams (CCTs) provide multidisciplinary community care for consumers living with enduring and complex mental illness in Southern Tasmania.  CCTs are recovery-orientated and operate in a manner that is person-centred, strengths-based, trauma-informed, collaborative, and empowering.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Role

As part of a multidisciplinary mental health service delivering high quality mental health care and, in accordance with Mental Health Service principles, National Mental Health Standards, the Senior Career Medical Officer:

  • Provides comprehensive community psychiatric services in Tasmania.
  • Acts as a consultant to mental health professionals and health service providers, including general practitioners and other agencies, regarding the assessment and management of individuals with mental health disorders.
  • Provide clinical leadership in the delivery of acute mental health care to consumers of the CCT, Continuing Care Stream Services within Statewide Mental Health Services (SMHS) as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Undertakes supervisory responsibilities with Registrars, Resident Medical Officers and other medical staff as required/appropriate.

You will need

  • Capable of operating as a senior decision maker who has the appropriate clinical skills to work with minimal assistance from colleagues including the initial management of medical emergencies until a specialist becomes available.
  • Capable of working with a high level of autonomy in all work areas.
  • Knowledge of recent advances in medicine, including current drugs and technology.

Details of appointment

Permanent full time, day worker (with on call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from as soon as possible.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.

Salary

Senior Career Medical Officer Level 1 - 3 $198,083 - $212,180 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available 

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $10,300 per annum, pro rata 
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.

  • A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.
