At the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, we deliver a sustainable Tasmania by protecting and enhancing Tasmania's cultural and natural values; facilitating productive and sustainable industries; and by promoting the sustainable use, presentation, and enjoyment of our cultural and natural values. To support this, the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) is responsible for managing the fire risk and response to bushfires across all the land it manages.

As a member of the State Fire Management team, there is a requirement to fight fires and perform other fire management tasks including prescribed burning, clearing of vegetation, and maintenance of fire trails, firebreaks and waterholes. There is also a need to undertake the maintenance of firefighting and other equipment used in these tasks and to assist in other regional operations when there is not requirement for fire management.

Essential Requirements 

  • Meet medical and fitness requirements under the Fire Management Fitness Policy, involving medical assessment and completion of the fire-fighter fitness assessment at the ‘Arduous or Modified Arduous’ level.
  • Current Manual Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.

Band 2

  • Minimum 600 hours of combined bush firefighting and planned burns experience.
  • PUA201719 Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting Operations).

Band 3

  • Minimum 1500 hours of combined bush firefighting and planned burns experience.
  • PUA201719 Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting Operations).
  • Completion of the required units of competence as specified in Section 4.1.8 of the AWU Award, including nationally recognised and accredited training (courses) for the Crew Leader role.

Desirable Requirements

  • Remote Area First Aid Certificate.
  • Licences and/or certificates to drive firefighting vehicles and equipment.
