The Team
The Tasmanian Clinical Genetics Service (TCGS) is a Statewide service based at the Royal Hobart Hospital managing referrals across the State via outreach, phone and telehealth. The TCGS is a general genetics service including cancer and specialist areas such as neurogenetics, and provides prenatal, paediatric and adult genetic healthcare through direct appointments and participation in a wide range of MDT meetings and clinics across Tasmania. The TCGS team includes dedicated administrative support, research, allied health assistants, genetic counselling and clinical genetics staff who work closely together to support the Tasmanian genetic and rare disease community and the healthcare providers involved in treatment and management.
The Role
The Allied Health Assistants - Genetics provide support and assistance in the delivery of genetic health services to patients/clients of TCGS under the supervision of the Senior Genetic Counsellor and other genetic counsellors as specified by the Senior Genetic Counsellor.
- Conduct pre-clinic contact, and relay factors that may affect urgency of referral (distress, high anxiety, pregnancies) that may not have been apparent at triage to the triage clinician.
- Document a detailed family history specifically related to, but not limited to, the referral reason.
- Complete accurate drawing of pedigrees.
You will need
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with people of various ages, cultures and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and people with a disability or special needs.
- Ability to work effectively both as a member of a multi-disciplinary team and under direct and remote supervision from Allied Health Professionals (genetic counsellors/associate genetic counsellors) and clinical geneticist/s.
- Knowledge of working within boundaries of patient confidentiality and ethical practice.

Details of appointment
Multiple Fixed term vacancies:
- Fixed term, full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight,
- Fixed term, part-time, day worker position, working 15.2 hours per fortnight,
commencing as soon as possible for 3 years.
*Notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.
Salary
$70,033 to $75,114 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2025.

Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)
Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:
- Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance or equivalent qualification or a commitment to attain this qualification or;
- Tertiary student of a relevant and approved AHP program of study at a recognised tertiary institution or;
- Current Master of Genetic Counselling student or;
- Master of Genetic Counselling graduate
- Current Driver’s Licence
