Job description:

Step into a role where every conversation counts—assessing safety, offering advice, and linking families with the right supports to protect and promote children’s wellbeing.

Make a Real Difference Where It Matters Most – Join Us as a Child Safety Wellbeing Worker

About Us

The Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) is committed to the safety, wellbeing and lifelong learning of Tasmania’s children and young people. Within DECYP, the Strong Families, Safe Kids Advice and Referral Line is a central contact point for people seeking guidance about concerns for children and is now entering an exciting period of transformation.

About the Role

As a Child Safety Wellbeing Worker, you’ll be part of a dedicated, collaborative team that responds to callers seeking information, advice and support about the safety and wellbeing of children and families. Working in statewide service based in Hobart, you will:

  • Answer and triage calls, to determine the most appropriate response in the best interests of the child.
  • Provide information and advice on service options and other approaches that support children and families and actively facilitate referrals to community and specialist services where appropriate.
  • Apply risk and safety assessment frameworks to identify when a child may be at risk and initiate protective responses as needed, including referral to the Child Safety Service for assessment.
  • Activate strengths-based responses with families and their networks to help build safety within the family context.
  • Collaborate with co‑located and external partners to seek specialist advice on complex concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records, prepare succinct summaries for review processes, and uphold privacy, confidentiality, and information-sharing obligations.

In this fast-paced environment, your calm, compassionate communication and sound professional judgement will help families access the right support at the right time—contributing to safer, stronger outcomes for children across Tasmania.

*Please note, a redesign of the Advice and Referral Line is currently underway to strengthen the response to vulnerable and unsafe children and young people in Tasmania through rapid screening and triaging.  Successful applicants will be joining the service at a time of exciting service evolution for the Child Safety Service and further information about this redesign can be provided by the contact person

What we are Looking For

  • We’re seeking people who bring:
  • A genuine passion for child safety, wellbeing and family support.
  • Exceptional communication skills for phone-based conversations—adept at listening, exploring concerns, de‑escalating, and explaining next steps clearly.
  • Sound assessment capability—able to apply risk and safety frameworks and exercise professional judgement under limited direction.
  • Strengths-based and trauma-informed practice, with cultural humility and a commitment to equity.
  • Relationship-building skills to collaborate with families, professionals and community partners.
  • Resilience, integrity and self-awareness, with a commitment to reflective practice, self-care and continuous learning.
  • Strong record-keeping and systems skills, including timely, accurate documentation.
