Job description:

Provide professional library and archives services to manage and provide access to State Library and Archives of Tasmania collections and services.

The Team

Libraries Tasmania is a unique organisation, providing contemporary library and archives services to all Tasmanians. Libraries Tasmania is responsible for Tasmania’s public library network, covering 47 locations statewide, and for the State Library and Archives of Tasmania.

This position is based in Hobart but provides opportunities to travel across the state. Hobart is a great place to live for those who enjoy both easy access to stunning national parks and beaches with the conveniences of a vibrant and beautiful regional city. It has a strong cultural scene that has recently been designated a UNESCO City of Literature.

About the Role

The Tasmanian Archives and Special Collections unit operates within the State Library and Archives of Tasmania. The State Library and Archives of Tasmania collects a copy of everything published in Tasmania and holds both Tasmanian Government and community archives, which have permanent evidential, historical and cultural value. The collections highlight Tasmania’s global history, historic Tasmanian books, newspapers, maps, manuscripts, fine arts and rare books. As well as the historiography of indigenous rights, penal policy, white settler colonialism and environmental histories.

These collections are accessible to the public via the website of Libraries Tasmania and at physical service points in Hobart and Launceston.

In performing the role, you will contribute to developing, preserving, and ensuring the accessibility of our collections through a range of duties including:

  • Working with Tasmania’s Legal Deposit program and actively promoting it to local publishers and organisations.
  • Liaison with donors and specialist sellers to acquire material.
  • Using and developing skills in a range of collection management tasks and processes.
  • Working with a range of fragile and diverse items to complete tasks including appraisal, storage, and basic conservation.
  • Undertaking continual professional development to ensure that your practice is in line with national and international standards and approaches.
  • Actively participating as member of the team, sharing your knowledge and ideas and assisting in the support, supervision and training of volunteers and less experienced staff
  • Contributing to achieving greater awareness of the role and function of the State Library and Archives of Tasmania.
