Job description:

The position contributes to the Court by providing assistance to the Registrar; legal expertise and leadership to Court staff, particularly in relation to probate and civil matters; providing an efficient assisted dispute resolution service; and by the efficient exercise of statutory functions as required.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 hours per fortnight - flexible options available. 

Duties

  • Provide advice on legislation and rules to Court staff and legal practitioners, particularly in the civil and probate jurisdictions. 
  • Review and determine applications, including complex applications received in the probate jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
  • Conduct mediations and assist in the management of mediation processes.
  • Perform other legal functions as determined by the Registrar including exercising statutory functions conferred upon the Registrar under sections 5K and 5L of the Supreme Court Act 1959, as delegated, in particular:
    • taxing bills of costs
    • settling appeal books.
  • Contribute to the administration of the Court through active participation as part of the Court’s management team.

Essential Requirements

Admitted or eligible for admission as a Barrister or Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Tasmania

Desirable Requirements

  • Significant relevant experience.
  • Training and experience in mediating in legal contexts.

Pre-employment (National Police Record) checks for: Arson and fire setting, violent crimes and crimes against the person, sex-related offences, drug and alcohol related offences, crimes involving dishonesty, deception and/or conspiracy, making false declarations, malicious damage and destruction to property, serious traffic offences, crimes against public order or relating to the Administration of Law and Justice, Executive or the Legislative Power.
  2. Disciplinary action in previous employment.
  3. Identification check.
