We are seeking suitable applicants to join the team as Emergency Medicine Career Medical Officers at the Royal Hobart Hospital in 2025.

  • Full time or part time work
  • Employment duration negotiable up to 12 months

The Role of the CMO – Emergency Department

Based in the scenic waterfront area of Hobart, Tasmania, as one of our CMOs you’ll provide emergency care to patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH).

CMOs share a roster with the Registrars.  We understand the importance of time outside work and can accommodate part time needs including those with multiple workplaces.  There is however a requirement for availability to include either Thursdays (to cover Registrar teaching) or some weekends.  There is not an expectation to do night shifts, but they can be rostered if desired.  Shift and leave requests are incorporated into the roster and fixed days or a rotating flexible pattern of work can occur depending on preferred work pattern and roster requests.  Shifts are 9.5 hours in duration and full-time work is 8 clinical shifts per fortnight.

To be eligible as per the award a CMO must be at minimum PGY5.

There is not an automatic salary progression from CMO to Senior CMO (progression is via an application process). Senior CMOs must demonstrate that they can function as senior decision makers within the emergency department with clinical duties and or administrative responsibilities expected of a Senior Registrar.

Successful applicants will be joining a department dedicated to the wellbeing of its staff, exemplified by winning the ACEM Wellbeing Award in 2022 for our numerous wellbeing strategies embedded in our daily work practices.

The Emergency Department provides opportunities for you to gain additional qualifications in Emergency Medicine, such as:

  • Emergency Medicine Certificate
  • Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program
  • Advance Emergency Medicine Training Program
  • Extended Skills Training for GP Trainees
  • Advanced Specialised Training for ACCRM Trainees

Through it all, you will work with a vibrant mix of locals and new Tasmanian adventurers who are all dedicated to making a difference in our state. Tasmania is experiencing a sustained period of growth. Come and be part of an exciting and rewarding place to work where your energy and positive values will contribute to sustained change as we grow. We can’t wait to welcome you into our team!

A few of our benefits:

  • Extensive salary packaging options
  • Excellent leave benefits (including professional development leave)
  • Mentoring and support with an inclusive and well-respected team
  • Diverse career pathways and professional development
  • Collaborative relationships with a range of professionals across multiple disciplines
  • Award winning health and wellbeing programs (Our onsite ED therapy dog Teddy, can’t wait to meet you!)
  • Employer visa sponsorship and support for families for overseas applicants.

About the Royal Hobart Hospital

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital in Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The hospital provides all general and specialty medical and surgical services as well as paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry. It is also the state’s tertiary trauma centre.

The Emergency Department (ED) provides a tertiary level service for people with illness or injury 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Our busy ED provides care for >75,000 patients annually with an admission rate of more than 35% and a paediatric case load of 20%.

The RHH Emergency Department has a co-located Emergency Medical Unit (EMU) which is a short stay ward for patients requiring a brief hospital stay (generally less than 24 hours).  The EMU has 28 short-stay beds operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a high turnover ward environment and a variety of clinical presentations.

The health demographics of the Tasmanian population means you’ll get to work with a greatly differing population, often more unwell, with more advanced pathology. We have a specialised and highly dedicated allied health team based in the ED to ensure alternated pathways to hospital admission are fully utilised.

The RHH Emergency Department is a fast-paced and energetic environment and there are opportunities for staff to be involved in a variety of projects, clinical and research opportunities.  Administrative time can be negotiated for these activities.
