Job description:

The Senior Policy and Risk Officer role supports improvement across government schools by leading and coordinating the development, implementation and review of strategic policies, system-level projects and initiatives that strengthen teaching, learning, wellbeing and operational effectiveness. The position applies a strong risk lens to ensure that policy design and implementation appropriately address safety, legal, operational and equity risks for all schools and learners. Working in a dynamic team, the occupant undertakes complex analysis, identifies system risks, prepares authoritative advice, and embeds risk mitigation strategies into policy and project design. The role contributes to improved outcomes for children and young people in DECYP schools through high-quality policy development, strategic problem-solving, and practical guidance that supports consistent, effective practice across the system.

The Team

The portfolio for Development and Support plays a critical role in shaping the guidance, tools, and supports that enable staff working directly with children and young people to deliver high quality, consistent practice. Staff across the portfolio translate intention into action by curating and developing clear, evidence-based guidance and designing implementation approaches that support improvement where it matters most—at the point of delivery for children and young people in Tasmanian Schools and Child and Family Learning Centres.

The work ensures that schools and Child and Family Learning Centres have the clarity, resources, and confidence needed to provide effective, responsive services. By defining clear roles, strengthening capability, and embedding deliberate, evidence-informed improvements, positions with Development and Support contribute to a system where every child and young person receives the support they deserve, by design and not by chance.

Employees in this role champion consistent practice, support continuous improvement, and help build confident teams whose work has tangible, positive impact on the lives of children, young people, and their families.
