Job description:

Within this context the Safety and Security Officer will support the ongoing safety and security improvements at Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC) through maintaining the safety and security of AYDC by controlling access to the centre, screening for contraband, monitoring surveillance cameras and managing personal security equipment.

The Team

Our Custodial Youth Justice team supports young people in a safe and secure custodial environment at Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC) in Deloraine, Northern Tasmania. A safe environment is critical for the healthy development and rehabilitation of young people in a youth justice detention centre.  All young people, workers - including Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC) staff, teachers, nurses, service providers and contractors - all need to feel safe at all times while on the site.  A critical component of that safety is security.

About the Role

As a Safety and Security Officer you will support and maintain the safety and security of AYDC by controlling access to the centre, screening for contraband, monitoring surveillance cameras and managing personal security equipment.

We are offering

  • Fixed term, 12 months with an ASAP start date
  • Full-time, 76 hours per fortnight
  • Multiple vacancies to be filled

We are looking for

Essential

  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) with a registration Status – Employment
  • The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:
 
1 Conviction checks in the following areas:
 
a) crimes of violence
b) sex related offences
c) serious drug offences
d) crimes involving dishonesty
e) serious traffic offences
 
2 Identification check
3 Disciplinary actions in previous employment check

Desirable

  • Experience working in a Control Room or a security-critical environment
