Job description:

As a Youth Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting and supervising young people in custody, helping them build brighter futures through rehabilitation, education, and positive engagement. We are seeking dedicated and resilient individuals with experience working with youth to join our team at Ashely Youth Detention Centre – Tasmania’s only custodial youth justice facility.

About Us

The Department for Education, Children and Young People is proudly Tasmanian Government’s core child-centred agency. This means everything we do is to support children, young people and their families.

At Ashley Youth Detention Centre (AYDC), we provide a secure, therapeutic environment focused on rehabilitation, education, and positive reintegration into the community. Our team works collaboratively to promote safety, wellbeing, and respectful relationships, helping young people build brighter futures.

About the Role

As a Youth Worker, this is your opportunity to make a difference. To build a better, positive future for young people in a custodial environment. To help get their lives back on track, so they can participate fully on their return to the community.

As a Youth Worker, you will:

  • Provide high-quality care, supervision, and support to young people in a secure, therapeutic environment.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to implement case management plans and programs.
  • Promote safety, wellbeing, and respectful relationships through trauma-informed and restorative practices.
  • Respond to challenging behaviours using approved de-escalation and intervention techniques.
  • Be a positive role model and mentor, helping young people reintegrate into the community.

What We’re Looking For

Although a Certificate IV in Youth or Community Services helps, we’re really after the right people.

Our staff come from many different walks of life and bring value every day. We’re looking for people with life skills, who can communicate well and stay calm under pressure.

You will need to:

  • have genuine motivation to support vulnerable young people to build positive futures
  • provide daily structure, care and supervision to young people
  • motivate young people to set goals, make better choices, and develop life skills
  • build positive and professional relationships with young people
  • excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • manage challenging and, at times, aggressive behaviour using therapeutic and trauma-informed practices.

What we are offering

  • Starting salary is $81,915 up to $94,263 per annum.
  • Five (5) weeks accrued recreation leave
  • Be part of a values-driven organisation committed to Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Make a real impact in the lives of young people and the broader community.
  • Access ongoing training, development, and career progression opportunities.
  • Work in a supportive, inclusive, and dynamic team environment.
  • An additional 6.5% Corrections Allowance, and generous penalty and overtime rates.
  • This is a General Stream Band 4, under the Health and Human Services (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
  • This is a shift-based role and includes weekend and night work.
