Job description:

Professional Standards Command Internal Investigations Unit (IIU) has recently expanded to allow for family violence and sexual abuse (including child sexual abuse) involving police to be investigated separately to other matters, and with specialisation in a trauma informed practice that is victim centric. The investigation support officer is a critical component within the investigative team whose objective is achieving strong outcomes in matters that are sensitive and can be complex, fast-paced and dynamic. This is an exciting opportunity to hold a newly created position and to be part of a brand-new initiative to provide improved support to investigators and victim-survivors (police or civilian) of family violence and sexual abuse (including child sexual abuse) involving police.

Fixed term until 20 July 2028. 73.5 hours per fortnight.

Duties

  • Understand trauma-informed and victim centric principles as they relate to family and sexual violence and child safety matters.
  • Review and assess investigation files to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Identify inconsistencies, gaps and risks in investigative practices and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Gather, analyse and report on data that supports corporate reporting and informs strategic decision making within the Command.
  • Plan and conduct research and analysis to meet operational and strategic requirements, including the identification of information gaps.
  • Use programs and tools to retrieve, analyse and present large volumes of information including written data, digital communications, audio material, visual imagery and CCTV.
  • Identify and collect information through the interrogation of databases, systems and open sources and submission of requests to other agencies.
  • Contribute to operational and strategic briefings and provide authoritative advice.
  • Identify risk early and share information with partner agencies for the prevention of harm in accordance with established protocols.
  • Build and foster strong working relationships with internal and external service providers facilitating collaborative practice and victim management.
  • Support police investigative practices, work within established guidelines and processes and support Professional Standards Command as required.
  • Apply well-developed organisational skills, and work in an environment that can be fast-paced and dynamic, with tight deadlines.
  • Participate in regular staff wellbeing checks.
  • In accordance with section 9 of the State Service Act 1984, maintain strict confidentiality in relation to duties.
  • Undertake other duties as required within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying jobs at this classification level, this may include providing evidence to a court.
  • Reasonable overtime may be required.

Essential Requirements

Pre-Employment Checks 

The Head of the State Service has determined that a person nominated for appointment to this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion or transfer. Any relevant serious criminal offence or repeated serious offences over any period, which are not mitigated by additional information, may provide grounds for declining an application for appointment. Such offences would include, but are not limited to:

  • Arson and fire setting;
  • Sexual offences;
  • Dishonesty (e.g. theft, burglary, breaking and entering, fraud);
  • Deception (e.g. obtaining an advantage by deception);
  • Making false declarations;
  • Violent crimes and crimes against the person;
  • Malicious damage and destruction to property
  • Trafficking of narcotic substance;
  • False alarm raising. 

Desirable Requirements

  • High level of skills in administrative support and project related work would be a competitive advantage.
  • Relevant experience as an intelligence support officer, analyst or comparative role in a law enforcement agency.
  • Completion of a relevant tertiary degree.
