Exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join the Department of Health!

Our multidisciplinary team within the Mental Health Inpatient Unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital provides high‑quality, person‑centred and trauma‑informed care to adults experiencing acute mental health challenges. We work closely with consumers, their families and carers, and a range of internal and external partners to deliver safe, recovery‑oriented treatment and support during periods of acute need.

The Role:

As a Registered Nurse on the Mental Health Inpatient Unit, you’ll be an essential part of a multidisciplinary team delivering evidence‑based, recovery‑focused care. Your days will be varied, meaningful, and grounded in strong therapeutic engagement.

You will:

  • Provide comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and ongoing monitoring of mental state and treatment response.

  • Deliver person‑centred, trauma‑informed nursing care in collaboration with consumers, families, carers, and the MDT.

  • Contribute to care planning, clinical documentation, risk assessment, and transfer‑of‑care processes.

  • Participate in quality improvement, research, and the development of best‑practice clinical guidelines.

  • Support a positive team culture through open communication, shared problem‑solving, and active participation in meetings and committees.

  • Promote community awareness of mental health and collaborate with external agencies.

  • Contribute to a learning environment through ongoing professional development, preceptorship, and education.

Details of appointment:

Multiple permanent, full time or part time, shift worker position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.

Salary: $80,524 to $109,175 per annum (Pro rata). Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Nurses and Midwives (Tasmania State Service) Agreement 2023.

Access to the Grade 4 salary range $102,439- $109,175 is subject to successful application for progression to Grade 4

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Post Graduate Allowance of up to 10% based on qualification type

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a Registered Nurse

  • Current Driver’s Licence (only applicable where the occupant is required to provide services to community-based clients)

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Possess or be working towards a specialist tertiary graduate or post graduate mental health/psychiatric nursing qualification, or completed prior to the transfer of nurse education to the tertiary sector, a hospital-based training program that resulted in previous registration as a psychiatric nurse by the relevant nurse registration authority within Australia
