Job description:

Provide quality specialist medical services to the Launceston General Hospital within the limits of specified clinical privileges.

The Team:

The Launceston General Hospital is recruiting for a fixed term Paediatric Specialist Medical Practitioner for 2026 to commence 13 July 2026 and finish 31 January 2027. 

We are a regional hospital with a brand new and exciting Paediatric short stay unit; as well as a 34 bed General Paediatric ward, 12 bed Level 2 neonatal nursery and Paediatric outpatients. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day by registrars and HMO staff, with consultant oversight on site during working hours, and on call overnight. The current staffing is 9 registrars/ HMO, a Senior Registrar and 7 paediatric consultants.

Daytime shifts as well participation in an after hours oncall roster will be required as rostered. Current hours would be 53.2 hours per fortnight.

We pride ourselves on being a lovely supportive team and you will be very well supported in this position. The unit has an active education program and is accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training for General Paediatrics with a Perinatal Component, Community/ Developmental Paediatrics and rural rotations.

The Role:

The successful applicant will be required to:

1. Provide specialist diagnosis, treatment and care for public hospital inpatients and outpatients.

2. Participate in an out-of-hours on call roster with other specialists if required and provide consultative services to other specialist units.

3. Supervise and teach junior medical staff and medical students attached to the clinical unit and participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs of the hospital.

4. Ensure that clinical records maintained on patients of the unit are timely, accurate and comprehensive and ensure good communication regarding patient care with referring units and community practitioners.

5. Participate in continuous quality improvement activities as approved by the Staff Specialist / Director – Women’s and Children's Services. Participate in such hospital committees and administrative matters as required by the Executive Director of Services – North and the Staff Specialist / Director – Women’s and Children's Services.

6. Participate in clinical research approved by the hospital research committee.

You will need:

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • Current Working with Children Registration
  • Sound knowledge of current specialty practice in Paediatrics
  • Recent experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide specialty services as defined by allocated clinical privileges.

Details of appointment:

  • Fixed term, part time, day worker (with on call) position, working up to 53.2 hours per fortnight, commencing from 13 July 2026 until 31 January 2027. *notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant

Salary:

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum, pro rata + 12% superannuation + access to salary packaging 

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 -$310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum, pro rata 
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 per annum, pro rata 
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $15,000 for eligible appointees from overseas, and up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.

  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $14.50 per week per person, or $28.05 for a family.
