Job description:

The person in this position is part of a team of professional staff engaged in the provision of an efficient and high-quality diagnostic laboratory service. The incumbent is expected to: • As a team leader, oversee the day-day operations of the Histology/Cytology sections within the Laboratory at the Launceston General Hospital, including coordination of the work of other professional and technical staff. • Work independently under the general supervision of the Medical Scientist in Charge to solve the more novel, complex and critical technical problems as they arise during the routine operation of the sections. • Demonstrate competence and proficiency compatible with their wide range of experience in the provision of this service. • Assume responsibility as delegated by the Medical Scientist in Charge.

The Team:

Northern Tasmanian Pathology Service (NTPS) provides Pathology services to Launceston General Hospital and the Northern regions of Tasmania. We are the only public pathology service operating in North Tasmania. NTPS aims to deliver a high-quality service to general practitioners, medical specialists and private hospitals, providing patients with no out of pocket expenses for Medicare eligible tests. The team at NTPS comprises a large team involving multi-disciplinary scientists, technicians, non-technical staff and Pathologists.

The Role:

The main focus of this role will be to assist the Medical Scientist in charge in the day to day running and management of the Anatomical Pathology department and undertake his/her duties in their absence. The successful candidate should also be able to apply professional judgement  and scientific specialist knowledge towards performance, analysis and troubleshooting of standard diagnostic procedures, whilst displaying a high level of leadership skills. 

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • At least 3 year experience as a Medical scientist in Anatomical Pathology Department
  • This appointee will be expected to undertake Scientific and Management duties in equal proportion. Hence, previous Supervisory or Management experience will be advantageous.
  • Cytology experience will be considered favourable.
  • Membership of AIMS or ASC will be an advantage.

Details of appointment:

  • Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing from February 2026.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary: $110,425 to $121,907 per annum. Our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022

You’ll have access to salary package a range of benefits including living expenses up to $9,010 + $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year + other benefits if eligible. 

Allowances: 

  • Please note that access to salaries beyond $119,290 is subject to qualifications and/or application to the personal upgrade scheme

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Professional Development Allowance of up to $1000 per annum

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.

  • Tertiary qualification/program of study in Medical Laboratory Science, Biomedical Science, Science or Applied Science or equivalent suitable to the position from a recognised institution.

  • Eligible for membership with a relevant professional body such as Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists, Australasian Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, The Australian Society for Microbiology, Human Genetics Society of Australasia or the Australian Society of Cytology

  • Where there is no relevant professional body the essential qualification must be met.

  • Membership/Fellowship awarded by a recognised professional body
