Job description:

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a “BASIC TRAINEE” (previously advertised as SRMO) for 2026.

The Tasmanian Health Service is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of our community.  We are committed to providing the highest levels of healthcare and services.

We are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a “BASIC TRAINEE” (previously advertised as SRMO) for 2026. This is a 12-month role offering a 6-month rotation in the Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU) of the Department of General Surgery and 6 months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as part of an agreed training program between both units. It is intended for junior doctors pursuing a career in General Surgery but would also be a valuable experience prior to training in other surgical and critical care specialties.

The Basic Trainee position in the ESU is a registrar position administratively but not functionally: It aligns with the registrar term dates but is part of the RMO roster and functions as a senior RMO. The roster includes some night shifts, with time allocated to undertake some administrative duties (primarily rostering). The Basic Trainee may be called upon to cover for registrar leave if necessary.

The ICU position is at a Junior Registrar level, with constant support from senior staff but also the expectation of seeing patients independently and performing invasive procedures. The roster involves regular day and night shifts (the unit has 4 on-site medical staff overnight).

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre.

As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH works closely with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.

Royal Hobart Hospital offers challenging and stimulating employment and future career opportunities with salary commensurate with qualification and experience.
